Income documents
- W-2s from every employer · 1099-NEC/1099-K for contract and platform income
- 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B (investment sales — with cost basis) · 1099-R (retirement distributions)
- K-1s from partnerships, S-corps, estates and trusts · SSA-1099 (Social Security)
- Rental income summaries · anything else that says "1099"
Deductions & credits
- Mortgage interest (1098) and property tax bills · charitable receipts and acknowledgment letters
- Medical expenses if substantial · childcare costs with provider EIN · tuition statements (1098-T) and student loan interest (1098-E)
- IRA/HSA contribution records · educator or job-related expense records where applicable
Business owners — add
- Year-end P&L and balance sheet (or your QuickBooks file — see QuickTune-up if it needs help)
- Bank and credit card statements, new asset purchases, vehicle mileage log, home-office square footage, payroll reports
Life changes worth flagging
Marriage or divorce, births, moves, home sales or purchases, new businesses, inheritances, big medical years — each changes the return. Jot them on page one of whatever you send us.
